Celebrating the unsung heroes on International Nurses Day

I always thought that Deniece Williams' song should have been about nurses… a song called Let’s hear it for the nurses would have been perfect for days like today, as we celebrate International Nurses Day!

Let’s face it, nurses are amazing – where would we be without them? They work incredibly hard to take care of us when we’re sick or injured, and they do it all with a smile on their faces. So, let's take a moment to appreciate all the incredible things they do.

Nurses are always on call

Whether it's in a hospital, general practice, or even at home, nurses are always ready to help out when needed. (Top tip: make friends with at least one nurse, and be sure to invite them on your camping trips ;) ). They are the superheroes of the healthcare world, and they're always on the front lines when it comes to keeping us healthy.

Nurses protect you in so many ways

Nurses don’t just look after your physical and mental health; they protect your privacy and your dignity. They see things they don’t want to see and carry out tasks that would make most of us blush. But they don’t judge, they don’t question why - they just do their job no matter what the situation is or how tough it gets.

Nurses are knowledgeable

Nurses have spent years learning about medicine, anatomy, psychology and how to provide us with the best care possible. They’re like walking encyclopaedias of healthcare. Do not – I repeat, DO NOT – challenge them to a body-parts naming competition … they can tell you which bone is connected to the hip bone within a blink of an eye!

Nurses are simply good people

I don’t know about you, but some of the kindest and most compassionate people I know are nurses. They have a way of making us feel at ease, even when we’re feeling our worst. They’ll hold our hands, listen to our concerns, and provide us with the comfort we need to get through tough times. They’re not just healthcare providers - they’re friends, confidants, and sometimes even therapists!

So, let's hear it for the nurses! If you know a nurse, or see one today, let them know how much you appreciate everything they do.
